A Unique Spirit
Inside the Byzantine Walls there was born a unique spirit that united Justice, Philosophy and Faith.
This spirit arrived to such unbelievable creations as is the Byzantine Iconography, “unparalleled in human history”, according to Runciman, “an art that arose from an ever varying blend of the cool cerebral Greek sense of the fitness of things and a deep religious sense that saw in works of art the incarnation of the Divine and the sanctification of matter.”
The same spirit provided the thinking of the great Byzantine Fathers, a theology that affirms the Bible by surpassing it!, by being the living proof of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Church even in a continuously advanced teaching. Any Orthodox Church knows very well that if she had to choose between the Bible and the works of the Cappadocians, Maximus, Symeon… she would choose, without any hesitation at all, to keep the writings of these Fathers.
Which Catholic Church would keep Augustine or Aquinas and not the Bible? Which Protestant Church would keep Luther and Calvin and not the Bible? I believe none of them, and rightly so.
